Job Summary:
The Maintenance Engineer at Avalon Palm Springs Hotel and Ingleside Estate is responsible for ensuring that all mechanical, electrical, and structural systems are operating efficiently and safely. This role requires proactive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of hotel property infrastructure, equipment, and systems to provide guests with a comfortable and secure environment. The Maintenance Engineer will perform both routine and emergency maintenance, addressing both preventative measures and urgent repairs, and will assist with general upkeep of the properties.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Preventative Maintenance & Repairs:
- Perform regular inspections and maintenance on HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical systems, lighting, appliances, and other hotel facilities.
- Carry out repairs, including fixing leaks, electrical failures, appliance malfunctions, and minor construction tasks.
- Maintain guest rooms, common areas, and back-of-house facilities to ensure cleanliness, safety, and comfort.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance tasks based on the established maintenance schedule to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of equipment.
2. Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance requests, including issues with heating, plumbing, air conditioning, electrical failures, and other urgent repairs.
- Address emergencies swiftly, with a focus on ensuring minimal disruption to guest services and comfort.
- Coordinate with relevant staff to ensure that any critical systems (e.g., water, electricity, heating) are back online as quickly as possible.
3. Guest Satisfaction & Communication:
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with guests, ensuring that maintenance issues do not negatively impact the guest experience.
- Communicate effectively with the front desk, housekeeping, and other departments to ensure that maintenance issues are promptly addressed.
- Participate in special projects to improve the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the property.
4. Equipment and Inventory Management:
- Monitor inventory of repair supplies and equipment to ensure adequate stock levels.
- Order and maintain parts and tools required for repairs, ensuring that all maintenance tools and equipment are in good working condition.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety protocols regarding tools, chemicals, and equipment usage.
5. Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure the hotel and estate follow all local and state safety, health, and fire regulations.
- Perform regular checks and maintain safety systems, including fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency exits, and lighting.
- Ensure proper labeling and storage of hazardous materials, including cleaning chemicals and paints.
6. Coordination and Reporting:
- Assist in coordinating larger repairs and projects with outside contractors.
- Document and report maintenance issues, repairs, and completed tasks in the maintenance management system.
- Maintain accurate logs for both preventive maintenance and emergency repairs.
A key requirement for this role is punctuality, including showing up on time for scheduled shifts, ready to work, and adhering to all rest and meal break standards as well as the company's attendance policy.
Physical Demands:
- Standing and Walking: Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, sometimes up to 8 hours per day, in order to perform routine inspections, repairs, and respond to emergency requests.
- Lifting: Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. frequently, and occasionally up to 75 lbs. with assistance.
- Climbing: Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding, or stairs to access roofs, HVAC units, electrical panels, and other high areas for maintenance and repairs.
- Bending and Kneeling: Must be able to bend, kneel, squat, and crawl to perform repairs in tight spaces, such as under sinks or behind machinery.
- Repetitive Motion: Frequent use of hands for tasks such as fixing equipment, turning wrenches, tightening bolts, and operating tools.
- Manual Dexterity: Must have good manual dexterity to handle small tools and parts effectively.
- Environmental Exposure: Ability to work in various weather conditions (heat, cold, and rain) when performing outdoor tasks, as well as in areas with noise, dust, and occasional fumes.
- Safety Gear: Must be able to wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses, and masks, as required.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Vocational training in maintenance, electrical work, plumbing, or HVAC systems .
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar maintenance role, preferably in the hospitality industry.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, as well as general building maintenance procedures.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and handle emergency situations effectively.
- Strong communication and customer service skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across departments.
- Ability to adapt to varying work conditions and schedules, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Certifications:
- Certifications in HVAC, electrical, or plumbing are highly desirable.
- Valid driver's license may be required if transportation between the Avalon Palm Springs Hotel and Ingleside Estate is necessary.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required based on operational needs and emergency situations.
