JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

This position runs the day-to-day operations of the Planning Division, and performs project management duties as directed by the Director of Planning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned)

• Plan, manage, and oversee the day-to-day operations and activities of the Planning Division.
• Perform environmental review, advanced and current planning services, zoning, and code enforcement.
• Coordinate assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies.
• Provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Planning.
• Conducts research, data collection and analysis; reviews and processes development applications; performs independent studies; and prepares reports and recommendations.
• Monitor compliance with tribal and federal laws and regulations.

• Ability to develop creative solutions to technical or complex problems when encountered.
• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in urban or regional planning, public administration, environmental planning/studies, natural resources, or related field. Possession of a Master's Degree and/or AICP Certification is preferred for the Principal Planner position.
• The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years extensive, progressively responsible experience with a planning consulting firm or local/regional government.
• Familiarity with the principles and practices of urban planning, applicable state and federal environmental and planning laws, city policies, regulations, and codes relating to planning, zoning, and land divisions, and an understanding of the procedures and processes of a municipal planning division.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to stand, move and work throughout the office area and properties, including walking up to 1 ½ mile, climbing stairs and sitting at a desk/work station for the duration of the shift. Must be able to perform field inspections and be able to work in heat for short periods.

Must be able to grasp, bend, lift and/or carry or otherwise move goods weighing a minimum of 25 lbs. on an intermittent basis, and sufficient dexterity of hand in order to use office equipment including, but not limited to: a computer keyboard, general office equipment, and multi-line telephone.
